Wednesday 4th of January, the staff at the department (IDI) gathered to celebrate Torbjørn Hallgren's 70 years birthday. Hallgren is signing off after 44 years at the university and SINTEF, but he still wish to contribute with graphic research at the department through his colleagues.
After graduating in 1966 from the Technical Physics programme of study at Norwegian Institute of Technology (NTH), Hallgren started working at Regnesenteret (RNTH). At RNTH he worked with technical/mathematical programming and taught the SIMULA programming language. Later he joined the Academic Administration at NTH, and pioneered the development of software for their academic needs.
In 1986 Hallgren joined our department, and started lecturing the major subjects in programming. His main responsibility has been computer graphics.
Hallgren was one of the initiators of the Distributed Visualization Laboratory (DVL). DVL began as a collaboration between departments and faculties at the university, since computer graphics and visualization required expensive equipment. Hallgren was crucial in establishing the cooperation - he has been a pioneer for computer graphics and visualization at the university.

Professor Dag Svanæs is one of the authors in the new online book, Encyclopedia of Human-Computer Interaction. Svanæs' chapter, the Philosophy of Interaction, has received great commentaries from both Donald A. Norman and Eva Hornecker, and it is currently used as the featured chapter of the book.
In the Philosophy of Interaction chapter you can watch four videos of Dag Svanæs, were he talk about the history of interaction design, and elaborates on concepts of interaction.
The Encyclopedia of Human-Computer Interaction is available for free from Interaction-Design.org. The Interaction-Design.org Foundation produce world-class educational materials by elite professors and elite designers, and give them away for free - to the benefit of both industry and academia all over the world.

Professor Eric Monteiro has landed NOK 10 million in funding for his Digital oil (Doil) research project. Monteiro's research project was one of only six projects to receive funding. It was chosen in hard competition among the 101 project applications sent to the VERDIKT programme.
The Research Council of Norway used international experts to evaluate the project applications for their VERDIKT programme. VERDIKT is a research programme, which aims to aid in the development of the Internet of the Future. The Digital oil project builds upon two of the three themes of the VERDIKT programme; Social networks, and the Internet of Things.
The name, Digital oil, is based on the use of sensors to generate data from oil and gas wells. More than 50% of the oil produced on the Norwegian continental shelf today is drilled from unmanned subsea wells, which only provide data through sensors and measurement devices.
A core project aim is to develop an in-depth understanding of theoretical and actual risks related to sensor-based data management. By doing so, the project will contribute to the discussions on automation in the gas and oil industry.
The Digital oil project is a joint effort with Statoil and the Center for Integrated Operations in the Petrolium Industry (IO center) at NTNU. Eric Monteiro hopes that the project will be a catalyst in collaboration between the department, Statoil and the IO center.
