Agnar Aamodt

I am a Professor of Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence in the Department of Computer and Information Science (IDI), Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU).
I am Head of the Division of Intelligent Systems (DIS), and a member of its research group for Knowledge-Based Systems (KBS).

My main research area is artificial intelligence (AI) methods for decision-support systems, with a focus on interactive problem solving and experiential learning in knowledge-based systems. The emphasis is on representing and utilizing knowledge that captures the semantics and pragmatics of real-world problem solving settings. Special fields of interest, and topics for students, are case-based reasoning, knowledge level architectures, ontologies, knowledge modeling/representation, combined reasoning methods, and AI-related aspects of cognitive science and philosophy. Type of applications focused are intelligent decision support, computer-assisted learning/tutoring, and knowledge management. Particular application areas are oil well drilling and medical decision making.

I have a Ph.D. from University of Trondheim, Norwegian Institute of Technology, Department of Computer Systems and Telematics. I have also spent longer periods as an employee or visitor in the AI labs at the University of Texas, Austin (1987-88), and Free University of Brussels, VUB (1991-92, mainly on the KADS-II project), and in the Institut d'Investigació en Intel.ligència Artificial (IIIA), Barcelona (2001-2002).

I currently chair the Norwegian national committee for promotion to professorship in computer science on personal merits .

I am Senior Advisor in the company Verdande Technology AS (formerly Volve AS), a spin-off company from my IDI-KBS group.
