Antigua in Guatemala was a pleasant surprise.  It is the old capital of Guatemala, founded in 1543, and is surrounded by some great volcanos.  This picture is taken from El Cerro de la Cruz.

La Merced church
La Merced church is one of the most beautiful buildings in Antigua.  Due to the earthquakes in the past, there are numerous church ruins in Antigua.

Alba in front of one of the volcanos outside Antigua.  The volcano, which is called Fuego, can be climbed in a few hours, though we chose to climb Pacaya instead.

The two most elegant teachers at Probigua, Nidia and Alba!  Probigua (Proyecto Bibliotecas Guatemala) Academia de Expanol is a charming Spanish school right in the center of Antigua.  At the time I was there, there were about 40 students at the school. Besides teaching Spanish, the school is helping the rural villages by establishing and maintaining a number of libraries.

Maestra y estudiante:  I came to Antigua with no prior knowledge of Spanish.  After four weeks of one-to-one instruction with Alba, I knew enough to manage in Bolivia and Peru afterwards.
