Professional Interests - What do I know and what do I not know?
Multimedia and Video Systems
- Working on a PhD in Storage and Delivery of Digital
Video. Using the Elvira video
server for practical tests.
- Former experiences from the VideoSTAR video database
prototype.
Databases
- Being part of the Database Research group has given me a strong
theoretical background in database systems.
- Practical experiences includes Master thesis in "Parallel
execution of Relational Algebra Operations" on one of the groups
home built hyper cube machines.
- One year of practical use of DB2 DBMS on a IBM 3090 running MVS.
- Database administration of the department's Oracle DBMS.
Operating Systems
- Good knowledge of Unix in general and particularly SunOS 5
(Solaris 2) - which is probably one of the best operating
systems ever made.
- Basic knowledge of NT, but do not use it except for running
Windows based applications. I still
believe NT one day have potential to become a good operating
system, and will probably learn it when someone pay me to do it.
Programming languages
- Good knowledge of C++ (and C), Pascal and Modula-2.
- Basic knowledge of perl and ADA.
- Java has potential to become a good language, and will probably
be my next language to learn.
- Would like to learn Lisp (Common Lisp?) when I get the time, or
when I really need it.
High speed networks
- We are using ATM for connecting the workstations in the Elvira
video server.
- Administration of the department's ATM network.
What I really have no interests in
- Graphical user interfaces, except for using them.
- Text processing using Word (I prefer LaTeX and Emacs).
