RAPID - RAPID Array of Parallel Independent Disknodes
Storage capacity requirements are rapidly accelerating. Every
year the largest Norwegian hospitals each produce medical images (X-rays, MR, CT, etc.) equalling 4TB of data. All pictures are stored for at least 10 years before they are destroyed. The cost is tremendous, both the development prosess (liquids, development paper, etc.) and the storage is expensive. The availability of the images is poor too, because there is only one copy of the image, it is stored at one location, and pictures may disappear. Similar applications for digital storage appear each year.
A RAPID file server has been proposed in order to serve such storage demands. The RAPID architecture, which is both a software and hardware architecture, should handle at least 100TB of data, and it must be fault tolerant. Furthermore both the performance, capacity and technology must be scalable.
This diploma thesis shall design the RAPID architecture and implement parts of it in order to test the solutions chosen.
