Professor of Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence in the Department
of Computer Science (IDI), Norwegian University of Science
and Technology (NTNU).
Member of the Data and Artificial Intelligence Group.
My main research area is artificial intelligence methods for data analysis and decision-support, with a focus on interactive problem solving and experiential learning. The emphasis is on representing, utilizing, and learning knowledge that captures the semantics and pragmatics of real-world problem solving settings. Special fields of interest, and topics for students, are case-based reasoning, knowledge level architectures, ontologies, knowledge modeling/representation, combined reasoning methods, and AI-related aspects of cognitive science and philosophy. Areas of applications focused are intelligent decision support, knowledge discovery from data, computer-assisted learning/tutoring, and knowledge management. Particular application areas are oil well drilling, medical decision making, and fish farming.
I have a Ph.D. from University of Trondheim, Norwegian Institute of Technology, Department of Computer Systems and Telematics. I have spent longer periods as an employee or visitor in the AI labs at the University of Texas, Austin (1987-88), Free University of Brussels, VUB (1991-92, mainly on the KADS-II project), University of Sao Paulo, Sao Carlos campus (1996), the Institut d'Investigació en Intel.ligència Artificial (IIIA), Barcelona (2001-2002), University of Auckland (Fall 2012), Université Claude Bernard Lyon 1 (Spring 2013), and Robert Gordon University, Aberdeen (Fall 2017).
I have tried to maintain a list of selected publications over the years, and still do. However, the more recent parers are now automatically referenced in the Cristin system, as well as in Google Scholar. Extended information is available in my summarized CV. A 2-page short version with last years' publications can be found here.
Last year's CBR conference, ICCBR 2017, took place in Trondheim in the end of June. This year's conference, ICCBR 2018, will be in Stockholm, Sweden, co-located with IJCAI 2018.
